The NPC Deck Is Unlocked! Where Shall We Go Now?
about 6 years ago – Mon, Mar 16, 2020 at 01:05:27 AM

Greetings, delver—

Our trip into the dungeons has borne fruit! You have unlocked the Ptolus NPC Deck!

The handy Ptolus NPC Deck will detail scores of personalities from around the city. Each system-neutral card will give you quick access to a PC’s name, appearance, personality, allies and opponents, and related information, and includes the page reference so you can look up further information and stats in the book.

Every backer at the HERO level and above will get the Ptolus NPC Deck in print. And all backers at RESIDENT and above get it in PDF!

Where to Next?

As we unlock stretch goals we’re asking you to choose the directions in which we explore. To recap:

  • Roam the city to expand and improve the Ptolus book itself.
  • Delve into the dungeons to unearth related treasures—separate items that benefit your Ptolus game.
  • Or ascend the Spire to unlock entirely new content and products. But beware: the Spire is not for the meek. The further up the Spire we aim, the more experience we’ll need to gain in the other regions beforehand.

With each new stretch goal, we’ll open a survey to poll you, the backers, about this choice. The poll will be open for a limited time, after which we’ll tally the results and announce which way we’re headed—and what the next stretch goal will be.

You can vote for this stretch goal now! This poll will be open until noon EDT (9:00 a.m. PDT) tomorrow.

Once we have those poll results, we’ll announce them on the Kickstarter page, so be sure to stop by and see what’s next. Whatever the result, we’ll unlock the stretch goal when we get to $600,000.

Where will we go next?

Can’t Get Together with Your Gaming Group? Got Kids Stuck at Home?

As we begin practicing social distancing, this is a great time to explore gaming online instead of in person. But if you’re new to online gaming, maybe you don’t know much about how to make the most of it. Great news: we’re releasing the Playing Games Online chapter from Your Best Game Ever, in its entirety, for free. We’ve rolled it into the free preview for that title, so if you download that, you’ll get the entire chapter on online gaming.

Games are also a great activity for kids stuck at home, and it so happens we make some great games for kids! To make it easier (particularly for families whose finances may be at risk from COVID-19) we’ve put the entire No Thank You, Evil! line on sale. Every No Thank You, Evil! product is 50% off. For families with older kids and teenagers (and adults, too!), the sale also includes the Numenera Starter Set.

You can find all the details at the MCG Shop. We’ll keep this sale open for as long as conditions warrant (subject, of course, to product availability).

Monte, Bruce, Sean, and Special Guest Chris Perkins Share Ptolus Memories Tonight—and You’re Invited!
about 6 years ago – Thu, Mar 12, 2020 at 09:14:24 PM

Greetings, delver—

Want to hear some rollicking tales of the original Ptolus campaign, from the famous game designers who were there? Would you like to be part of the conversation?

Tonight Monte is joined by Bruce R. Cordell, Sean K. Reynolds, and Wizards of the Coast’s Chris Perkins to chat and reminisce about the four-year campaign—and you’re invited too! Join us to hear their stories, and, time permitting, ask questions of your own. It takes place tonight at 10:00 p.m. EDT (7:00 p.m. PDT) on the Monte Cook Games Twitch channel.

Sean and Chris anxiously await the outcome of a critical scene in a session of Monte's original Ptolus campaign.

Monte’s four-year Ptolus campaign ran during and after the development of D&D’s 3rd Edition, and the players were all insiders: designers, editors, business and marketing managers, and creative directors for the game. Their influence touches almost every corner of Ptolus, and it’s fair to say that the Ptolus campaign influenced the development of the game as well. Bruce, Sean, and Chris were all players in that original campaign, and they continue to shape leading RPGs today—Bruce and Sean as designers here at MCG, and Chris is the Senior Story Designer for D&D at Wizards of the Coast.

You know they have tons of great stories. Join us this evening to hear a few of them as they reminisce and maybe even take a few of your questions!

You’ve Voted: We’re Headed into the Dungeons!
about 6 years ago – Wed, Mar 11, 2020 at 02:09:53 AM

Greetings, delver—

Yesterday we knocked out another stretch goal, bringing The Doctrine of Ghul to life. Or unlife. One of those two.

Then we opened our new poll, and you voted on the next stretch goal. The poll closed this evening, and you chose to take us down into the dungeon.

That’s our next stretch goal: The Ptolus NPC Deck. This handy deck will detail scores of personalities from around the city. Each system-neutral card will give you quick access to a PC’s name, appearance, personality, allies and opponents, and related information, and finishes it off with the page reference so you can look up further information and stats in the book.

We love to make products and tools that reduce the burden on the GM and support fast and easy gaming, at the table and during the GM’s prep. This deck will put dozens and dozens of NPCs at the GM's fingertips, with the details that really bring them to life.

We’ll unlock the Ptolus NPC Deck at $540,000. It will be added in PDF to the rewards of every backer at the RESIDENT and higher level, and in print to the rewards of all HERO and higher backers!

Adventure Unlocked! What’s Our Next Destination?
about 6 years ago – Tue, Mar 10, 2020 at 01:03:12 AM

Greetings, delver—

We have once again ventured up the Spire, and we have returned successfully. The Doctrine of Ghul, a new adventure by Bruce Cordell, is unlocked!

Ghul claimed to be the offspring of Eslathagos Malkith—the creator of Jabel Shammar, a fortress so evil that the very earth pushed it away, forming the Spire. Ghul himself created Goth Gulgamel, his fortress halfway up the Spire. Lately, talk of a newly-uncovered ancient manuscript scribed by the Half God himself swirls around Delver's Square. Is there any truth to these rumors, and if so, what does this mean for the city of Ptolus—and the entire Empire?

The Doctrine of Ghul will be a hefty adventure in PDF. Everyone at RESIDENT and above will get the The Doctrine of Ghul, in PDF, added to their rewards automagically!

This poll will be open until 6:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday.

Once we have those poll results, we’ll announce them on the Kickstarter page, so be sure to stop by and see what’s next. Whatever the result, we’ll unlock the stretch goal when we get to $540,000.

We can’t wait to see where you take us next!

The Doctrine of Ghul
about 6 years ago – Sat, Mar 07, 2020 at 01:21:04 AM

Greetings, delver—

Check this out:

That’s The Doctrine of Ghul, the adventure we are juuuuust about to unlock. At the time we announced it, Bruce hadn’t settled on a name, and we didn’t have a mockup of the cover. But now we have both, so we wanted to share it with you!

The Doctrine of Ghul will be a hefty adventure in PDF. Ghul created Goth Gulgamel, the fortress halfway up the Spire, and claimed to be the offspring of Eslathagos Malkith—who himself created the wicked citadel at the top of the Spire, one of the most innately evil sites in the world. Lately, talk of a newly-uncovered ancient manuscript scribed by the Half God himself swirls around Delver's Square. Is there any truth to these rumors, and if so, what do they portend?

Bruce Cordell is a master writer of adventures with a dark twist, and he'll be working with Monte and Sean (who, like Bruce, played in Monte's original Ptolus campaign). You know it's going to be epic!

Every backer level from RESIDENT on up will get The Doctrine of Ghul in PDF. It seems likely we’ll unlock it within the next few days. If you’d like to hurry that along, and get us toward more stretch goals even faster—
